after finding what people say is the best aa type. im going to choose MSAA as people say that it is the best.

But.. what are some disadvantages? why doesnt everyone use it?

uses lots of vram. pretty hefty hit on performance

Because it causes a big performance hit.

If you're running at 1440p or 4K the image is a lot sharper so AA isn't really needed but on 1080p AA smooths out the edges a lot.

No AA, best AA.

I don't agree with that. Have you recently played something on an ordinary 1080p screen. The flickering can get to obnoxious levels. I really disagree with you on that one. There are som many instances where some AA of any kind kand really polish you game's looks by a lot.

If Nvidia's MFAA and TXAA would work as claimed they would be a better choice but I personally have never had more luck with TXAA vs MSAA (gtx 770 has no support for MFAA so ...). the performance hit was always pretty high.

If they really worked exactly as advertised they'd be miles better than MSAA but well I never saw those benefits anywhere.

Coming back to your "question" I'd say depending on the scenario MSAA is usually what you would go for. In some cases you might need to preserve CPU performance and do not care about a little bit of quality loss. Then I will go for FXAA for example.

To conclude I'd say MSAA is the AA that is just used the most because it is the most "ordinary". In some situation you might be better of with something else for whatever reason. Life is usually no as easy as ONE go-to option all the time.
