Recommended Power Supply

Go to solution Solved by OSBK,

that's overkill

it's a 390X after all, and he said he'll be overclocking both CPU and GPU, it's not too much and at least he will be able to achieve some good results and stability too

Jumping to a R9 390X from a R9 380X isn't a big upgrade. Get a R9 Fury or 980Ti later on.

i would recommend a 700watt PSU if you are going to get the 6600k and 390x, and overclock them to the heavier side.

i dont have much experience with seasonic, i usually go with brands such as Coolermaster, Corsair and EVGA.

It should be enough though, you are pushing it but not much.

Even 550W is enough as long as the PSU is good. 620W will be perfectly fine

he's fine

When you say "enough" do you mean the base build or if I upgrade it to a 6600k and r9 390x?

5500W can easily handle a 6600K and 390X though a Fury is a better upgrade

Yes, though I would recommend a 980Ti without upgrading your CPU.

a OCed 390X uses 400W

The rest of the system OCed needs 120W

HOW EXACTLY DO YOU SEE 750W AS BEING NEEDED?

That could easily handle a DEC 20 and a three bar electric fire . :P

Well, I may add more fans and drives. Better safe than sorry I guess.

A fan uses 5W of power to spin at 2000RPM usually

A drive uses 15-20W

620W S12II is more than capable of handling it. Don't give into to senseless blatter

It's ok. I know it will be long before I upgrade my psu, with the way most manufacturers tend to be innovative with their products and lower their power consumption, I think the only way I will upgrade/ change my power supply is if I SLI/ Crossfire.

well you got a point, but in guru3D the r9 390x requires you to have a 550~600 Watt power supply unit, and with some overclock it's about 6XX watt, and the overclocked i5 would be 120W as you said so i think it's not that overkill. here is the link for guru3d http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/msi-radeon-r9-390x-gaming-8g-oc-review,8.html

what?

You typoed, 5500 W instead of 550 W.

I was saying the power supply was big enough to run an old mainframe (not known for electrical efficiency) and still have enough left over to run an electric fire
