I thought I would give a quick review of a new SSD I got on eBay. This may only be useful for people in the USA. So essentially its a cheap small SSD. Here are the specs...

  • Samsung Branded
  • Samsung MLC NAND and Controller
  • 16GB
  • Mine seems to have a date of 2009
  • SATA REV II

So some may say its to small or to slow but I beg to differ for my intended use case, pfSense firewall. I think this will be great for proxy cache and other firewall duties, assuming it lasts.

I'm going to be putting it in a Pentium IV with SATA REV I, so I think this will be a great fit, and for $20 its hard to go wrong.

Here are some benchmarks on my Z87 chipset, so no bottlenecks.

Now lets compare that to a Seagate HDD, mind you this HDD is similar to what I have in my firewall which is why I decided to compare this drive. And some quick specs...

  • Seagate 2.5" Laptop HDD

Some images of the SSD itself. Took it apart if someone is interested on the specific parts used.

Happy Cheap SSD Time!!!

p.s. I'll try to remember to post here, when/if it dies.

Lol yeah it is. It was quite a shock to me as well.

I am in shock! Cut it in half and have it in a custom enclosure for space management or something!
