what is your opinion on the hd 598 vs beats solo 2? do you think they sound the same to the average consumer

They're targeted at completely different people and completely different usages. Beats are extremely bass heavy and sound "good" while HD 598's are much more clear and accurate. The HD 598's will sound much more clear and will represent what you are playing far more accurately. Beats has its own agenda when it comes to accuracy. Beats are closed back while HD 598's are open back. You can't use 598's on the bus, in public, on a plane, etc. due to this. It's just not a good comparison.

Well. I have Beats and I think they sound like shit despite the fact that portion of my music is pure dubstep and should sound good on them.

The problem is in the way bass is handled. It`s just not fast enough and often sound muddy. <_<

I still keep and use them from time to time because I got them as a gift.

They're different types of headphones. The 598 is an open, over-ear, entry-level hi-fi headphone for critical home listening. The Solo 2 is an on-ear, closed, mobile headphone.

The biggest flaw now with Beats is that they are overpriced; however it's worth noting that the 598 is somewhat overpriced as well, as it is identical to the 558 which is nearly 50% cheaper.
