AMD system with NVIDIA Card

Go to solution Solved by Necrodead,

do you know where i can find a reliable comparison of the 2? gpu boss seems biased

Very bad on GPU boss, always look up benchmarks for the games you want to play, imo. Heres one pic I found on tomshardware, which seems to be pretty good.

so i just put together an AMD fx8350 powered system and i unfortunately got the gtx950. im looking to upgrade to the 960 or the r9 280x. since they are both in the same price range and it looks like they both preform about the same does it matter if i get an nvidia card over the amd? my mobo is the asus m5a97 r2.0 and i dont think i can crossfire with the built in graphics which is why im leaning toward the gtx960 since EVGA is all i have ever bought. would i benefit from an amd cpu AND and amd GPU?

Nope it doesn't but the 280X is superior to the 960.

No. Between those 2 cards id'e get the cheaper, since they perform the same. Remember, EVGA B-stock is a thing.

But I wouldn't upgrade if you already own the 950. Only minuscule performance gains by both.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

the 280x is a more powerful card and is generally recommended, especially if its a 4gb version, as the 960 can't even use more than 2gb of VRAM even if you get the 4gb card.

The GTX 960 is fully capable of using the 4GB's of VRAM- the 128bit memory bus nor the core is a bottleneck so drop your AMD fanboism and google delta color compression.

If you were going to get a new graphics card, the 380x or 390 would be a really good card(s) to get, a 960 would be a poor investment as its incrementally better than the 950, so save your money to get a card that will be worth upgrading too.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

Sorry I got my facts wrong bro, are you saying the 960 is faster than the 280x in gaming? I'm only a fanboy of performance.

No you said the 960 couldn't use 4GB's of VRAM, which it can.

Yes, it does matter- spreading misinformation matters. Google "delta color compression" and how it works.

Well my friend, you have your work cut out for you if you want to stop all misinformation on this forum, cause that`s where I read it. The good thing about forums tho, is that someone can come in and correct me like they have, now we all know. :)

so looking at the specs what makes the 390x better than the 280x? all i see is more vram

Did you mean 380x vs 280x? The 390 and 390x are better cards than the 280x/380x, where as there is only a very small difference between the 380x and 280x, the 300 series is just a rebranded version of the 200 series. the extra vram is really only useful if you plan on playing 4k or running crossfire.

(actually they aren't all rebrands, but it amounts to much of the same, although I have yet to see 380x benchmarks as the card was just released like a few weeks ago.)

Since when does a 384bit MI feature 4GB VRAM? A R9 280X aka HD7970 has 3GB VRAM. Don´t post such nonsense, this forum has the reputation to be helpful.
