My first PC build

Go to solution Solved by Streetguru,

The Haswell based one is one that I'm particularly interested in

just about anything you buy is going to be outdated within a year or 2, the only thing you can future proof is like your case, and that's about it, maybe fans and your heatsink as well, I doubt SSDs are going to be outdated anytime soon aside from cheaper SSDs in the future.

the motherboard just had decent reviews and was cheap

ya, the 6600k has 5% more IPC, and gives you USB 3.1 but most people aren't going to need that really

pff, color sceme, performance per dollar above all else man.

This is my first PC build ever. I'm buying in Canadian dollars and all I want to be able to do is play the vast majority of games at 1080p, 60fps, with the settings at max or high. Games like Fallout 4, Just Cause 3, GTA V, Cities: Skylines, Alien: Isolation, Space Engineers, CS:GO, COD: Black Ops 3, Battlefield 4, etc. I plan to overclock this build, but I have no idea how much since I've never OC'd before.

I was initially going to go with this build, but I've done some tweaking and ended up with this:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($133.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: *Crucial 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  ($54.00 @ Vuugo)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro Video Card  ($429.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($97.05 @ Vuugo)
Total: $1213.43
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria

NOTE: I do not need storage included as I already own a large solid state drive

I want to know if this build will suit my needs, and if this build is going to be future-proofed to some degree. This also should support Oculus Rift, since the minimum requirement for Oculus is an R9 290, correct?

If there are any improvements that can be made that will improve my performance and won't cost a lot of extra money, please let me know :)
Also, I didn't really pay attention to color scheme. I only grabbed the parts that I think will work best. If you can change this to fit to a color scheme that's not disgusting (no green-purple color scheme ) without making it cost a lot more, that would be great as well. :)

Thanks!

So there is absolutely no advantage to having the 6600K? Even for overclocking?

I also didn't need storage included in the build  :P

I appreciate you taking time to do this for me

Mostly helps with minimum frame rates once OC'd, but I wouldn't really say it's worth it overall, for around the same price as that i5 you can get what is basically an i7 and have twice the threads, I guess if you're really going to double down on VR, the unlocked CPU is going to help

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3

also that Z170 board you picked doesn't appear to have too great reviews

haswell based one, with a beefier cooler, sadly you can't get the HR-22 in canada

How future-proofed would you say this build is?

And you only picked the 4690K for value, not higher performance than the 6600K, right?

edit: why did you pick a Micro ATX instead of an ATX? Is there really a disadvantage to the Micro ATX?

and is it fitting to a color scheme? thanks :)
