first off, i hope this is the right topic. if not, sorry about that.

ok, so I will be purchasing a saphire r9 390 which is a pretty big card - 301mm in length. i plan on putting it in a zalman z11 case which i just got a few days ago ( i initially wanted to buy the gigabyte 390 but i read a few reviews that gave me some concerns and decided to go with the saphire one which seems to be relatively good ).

the problem is my case can't hold a gpu longer than 290mm. i think that if i remove the hdd supports it can hold a 300mm one but we're talking a massively tight fit. at best i may have a few mm's between the hdd vertical support plate and the gpu. it may even end up touching it, if i can even fit it in ( the back up plan if i can't fit it in is to either mess this case up and remove/bend that hdd vertical support or buy a new one ).

my question is this - will this be a problem ? does the gpu need space on that side ? i hope i was clear enough in my explanation.

also ... considering the large size of the gpu ... any advice on adding some support for it on this end so it doesn't bend with time ? is this even a valid concern ?

while i'm at it i will be buying a seasonic M12II-750 750W psu. i assume that should handle this system ( i7 / 16gb / 4 hdd racks w/ 1 ssd and 3 hdd's + r9 390 ), right ?

i don't know if i can but even if i could i don't really like doing that when there's nothing wrong with the product and also there's no need in this instance. if i need to, i have a friend that will buy it from me at roughly the same price so i won't lose much. i can just get a new case. plus, i'm lazy like that, i'd have to take it back and all that trouble. it's much faster to simply sell this one and get a new one.

but i do like it. plus i'd like to keep it because it has those 4 x 5.25inch enclosures that i need for my hdd racks. it's been rather difficult finding a case that i like that has 4 enclosures. while i have read some bad reviews about it regarding air flow i haven't had a chance to test that out. if it comes to that i will get a different case but so far i'm quite impressed by it and i'd like to try and keep it, at least till i find out if indeed it has bad airflow.

therefore ... my question about how much space does the gpu need on that end.

@huilun02 yeah, was thinking that if i need to i can probably do something like what that guy did with his zalman. but i would like to keep it nice and intact though. also yeah, figured 750w should be enough and i hear seasonic are relatively good psu's.

Did you already buy all the parts? If not, I'm going to suggest switching the i7 for the 1231v3, dropping 1 hdd, and switching the 390 to a fury x.

i will be getting the motherboard/cpu/ram combo in january but i already got the graphics card, picking it up today actually.

while the fury x for 390 kinda makes sense ( though it's way out of my price range ) i don't quite get the rationale for the processor switch. from a quick google search it appears the i7 6700k is better, and also more expensive apparently, than the e3-1231 .

i will be using this pc for gaming and work which involves just plain old illustrator/photoshop and maybe the occasional low poly render, but that's only a hobby and you can always pay for more hardcore renders at online render farms.

The switch is so that you can afford the fury x.

right ... missed that. i guess that's one way to go but i think the i7/390 combo will do a good job on 1080p for at least a year and after that it won't matter because in about a year i will either be upgrading my gpu or, ideally, get a completely new pc depending on how things go. at that point i will look towards a more powerful gpu and/or crossfire/sli since i will want to use multiple monitors at that point.

right now, this is great for what i need, plus ... that cpu seems to be considerably weaker than i7 and i'm not quite ok with giving up that much cpu power to get more gpu power.

It's not to get more gpu power, more over getting it so that it'll fit in the case, and not have to worry about overheating/ lack of air flow. Besides, the 1231v3 is a locked haswell refresh without an Igpu. Comparable to a stock 4790.

yeah, that could be a way to go. either way ... it's not set in stone yet so i can still decide on something else. a friend of mine suggested i might as well go for a i7 5820k which should give me good gaming results and also good processing power and it's relatively affordable.
