Fractal Design Node 304 Non Reference GPU cooling

Go to solution Solved by Acquire,

So, I bought a Node 304.  Moved all my stuff over.  Exactly as I thought.  GPU temps went from 84C to 74C.  GPU fan speed from 91% to 66%.  CPU temps went up from 45C to 55C, but this case supports larger cpu coolers, so I'm probably going to switch out my noctua nh-u9s for a nh-u12s.  Only complaint I have is the HDD cages for the node 304 are huge since they're made for 3.5" drives.  I would've liked an option for one that was only made for 2.5" drives since it would be shorter and more out of the way.  I ended up just hanging them off the case instead of using any of the provided cages.  It works surprisingly well. The PSU area could've also been moved more towards the right side of the case.  It has about 1" of space between it and the edge of the case, which is not at all needed.  The short cable kit from silverstone is fantastic for these types of builds.

I have an MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming GPU and am wondering how this case cools that.  Right now I went with a Corsair 250D, but am wondering if this case may be better.  The Corsair's placing of the gpu almost touching the solid top panel really kills cooling as the heat gets stuck in the front top of the case.  The Node 304 has a lot of vertical space above the GPU and fans that pass air right above it.

Right now under load my GPU hits 84C and the fans spin up to 91%, which is really loud.

I'm thinking this may be an overall better case for my setup:

  • PSU: Silverstone Strider Platinum 750W Fully Modular (140mm length) (short cable kit)
  • Storage: 2 Samsung SSDs
  • GPU:  MSI GTX 980 Ti Gaming
  • Motherboard: Asus ROG Maximus VIII Impact
  • CPU: Intel i7 6700k
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9S (I'd replace this with the NH-U12s in the Node 304)
  • RAM: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX

I have no need nor do I want 3.5" HDDs or a 5.25" ODD bay.  My only worry is cable management.  The Corsair 250D is pretty good with that given the large front area that's pretty much dedicated for this.  Although, I'm thinking this is where the short cable kit really comes into play for the Node 304.

Can anyone with a Node 304 and a non reference gpu comment on it's gpu cooling abilities?

Have you checked out the Core 500? It's the same size factor as the node 304 but with 240mm radiator mounts on top.

I have. Not a fan of its looks. The 5.25" plate in the front really clashes with it. I want to stick to air cooling anyway. The node 304 offers for large air coolers.
