hi guys I wanted to overclock my cpu my specs are:

intel core I7 3820 lga 2011 3.8ghz 38 x 100 mhz

asus p9x79

corsair vengeance ddr3 1600 mhz 16 gb

cpu coooler dark rock pro 3

I had the thing running at 4.1 ghz with turning up the bus speed and modifying the multiplier  with asus turbo v evo to 40 with stock voltage.

stability was good but when I go back to stock settings using the turbo evo app the system crashes and the computer booths 3/4/5 times then black screen appears saying that my oc has failed and I have to go back and set normal speed in bios.

Is the crash normal?

To try and push the oc more what should I do? it seems that changing the multiplier is something the cpu doesnt like should i increase cpu vcore voltage? (how much for at the time 0.005 volts?)

Should I flick the tpu switch on the mobo on?

What about ram voltage should I increase that too?

You're trying to OC a locked CPU- it will crash. I got mine to 4.05 GHZ. It made a bit of a difference in cine bench scores. You usually increase the base clock to OC a locked chip...

yehea I know its just for the fun maybe some one knew how to get more mileage from the oc

Its probably not even worth the hassle because what you get out of it will be very minimal.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

300MHZ isn't bad to be honest. You could try voltage pushing, but you're not going to get much more out of it. I'll make a guide in the tutorials section soon.

ok thanx for the help

Increase the platform clock to 1.25

And set the multi to max across all cores.

will try thanx

You should get something like this:

I believe 4.75 is possible as the multi can do x38.

thanx tonight I will try out is the voltage safe? how far can I push it? what about ram should I crank up the voltage as well of that as well?

That voltage is fine. on a 3820 you should be able to do 4.5 at less than 1.375V

Regarding RAM: when you set the platform clock to 1.25 your ram speed increases so you will need to re-adjust your RAM. For example if you have a 1600mhz kit you will need to drop the ratio to 1333mhz (you will get 1666mhz effective).
