CPU for handbrake

lets say if i were to upgrade my cpu to an 6600k or 6700k, will it improve the usage of handbrake? currently i have to wait around 10-12 minutes when doing a 300+mb video.

Yeah. Basically, more cores (hyperthreading counts) plus more GHz equals less time in handbrake...

Encoding performance is pretty straightforward. Just look up raw performance benchmarks (like Passmark). If it has a higher score, it should encode video faster.

If you're gonna spend money on the 6700K for Handbrake encoding you might as well go 5820K given how close in price they generally are.

5820K is better for that kind of workload due to its core & thread advantage

 

Although it might be a bit slower in games.. but who cares cause the handbrake difference will be pretty big compared to the 4fps you'll lose out on.

Skylake has a marginal per-core performance advantage, but you'd likely never notice the difference from gaming performance. The guy above estimated 4 FPS, and even that is probably an overstatement in many games. Right now the 6700K is $419.99 on Newegg (and not even in stock). It would be insane to pay that price for it in my opinion. The 5820K is a much better choice, or even a 4790K for like $300.
