PC Upgrade help

Go to solution Solved by DarkBlade2117,

Thanks, I'll try to get a new PSU first then go for the CPU I guess.

Get something like a 520w Antec High current Game or a EVGA B2 Series, if you have more of a budget get like a 550-650w EVGA GS or G2, even a GQ or any XFX or SeaSonic PSU.

Then for the CPU look into a i5-4460 or if you plan to do like video editing and recording a Xeon 1231v3 for around $230 will be much better.

So, I'm planning on upgrading my PC soon. Just a bit confused which I should prioritize first since I don't have a lot of cash and parts are pricey where I'm from.
I use this mainly for playing games, work and minor video and photo editing.

My PC specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel i3 4170 @ 3.70GHz
GPU: GTX 960 Inno3d Herculez X2 2GB OC
MB: Asus H81M-D
RAM: Kingston Hyper X 8GB DDR3 1600mhz
PSU: Huntkey 400w True rated
HDD: 2.5" 500gb Seagate

I just used my old laptop's hdd since it still works fine. I would appreciate it if you guys could tell me which part I should prioritize and why. Thanks!

CPU definitely. Get a quad-core i5 if you can, or an 8-core AMD (FX series) if you don't have the budget. Second priority should be the PSU.

SSD will make the biggest impact on day to day use. I would also get a better power supply too since I don't know that brand. From there upgrade depending on your needs. Ex: i5/i7 processor, more RAM, etc.

Better processor will help with gaming as well as video rendering. It should come before an SSD which isn't that necessary when he has an i3 dual core.

Yeah, to be honest I never heard about this PSU too when I got it. The CPU is one of my top choices so far, just need to save up a bit to get an i5 I think.

For the storage, is there really any difference if I just keep on using the 2.5" instead of a 3.5"?

AMD at this price point can offer better performance

But that would mean I need to replace the motherboard too :(

Storage should be fine. Size doesn't really matter.

Just save for an LGA1150 i5.

How about the motherboard? Any reason I should consider upgrading? I know the one I have is very entry-level. I should get a new PSU too I think, don't wanna blow this pc up due to some unknown PSU.

If your PC is just for general use as you say, you should be good. If you want to OC or something big like that then I would consider an upgrade. As of now it's fine.

Alright sounds like a plan. Go ahead and mark the post as resolved if you're okay (helps the mods out a bit).

I might get the seasonic one since I think it's a bit cheaper. For the CPU I'll look into the prices of those 2 since it's a bit expensive where I'm from.

Thanks, will do just that. :)

PSU... My order to upgrade personally would be: PSU, CPU, SSD, MOBO, then GPU last b/c that gpu should last a while

Yeah it's definitely what I'm going to be doing.

Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it!
