I wasn't even on the site, i wouldn't have seen the alert

It's still expected that you always follow any threads that you start, at least until you question is answered/the conversation is over, just so that you know when people reply. Not everyone uses quotes (as I didn't above, even though I generally do) so if you're not following your thread then you might not know when someone replies. Just a friendly FYI. :)
