I was thinking of buying an i54690k, but I was wondering does it really matter in games? My pc is just for games. Should I save some money and get a locked CPU with the same number of cores?

What games were you planning on playing?

Yeh if youre not into OC'ing then a 6500 will do great, or the Haswell counterpart. Overclocking your CPU isnt gonna determine how far you can crank the graphics slider in games for the most part.

As long as its a quad core with atleast 3GHz speed it will be good for gaming. If you dont plan to overclock then go with a non unlocked cpu.

The i5 4690k is the perfect CPU for gaming, it is actually the most common.  Also, the locked version (no k) is actually about $20 MORE (what!?!?) than the unlocked version so I would go with the 4690k.

I havent noticed any difference in games with a overclock on my 4690K, or at least not any difference worth the cost of the chip, beefier cooling solution, and nicer motherboard.

This is going to be a poor example but bare with me. I saw better performance overclocking my CPU, Motherboard and RAM not to mention my GPU, yes it's an AMD but it still carries over to Intel too.  ;)

Guess it depends on the use.

But nonetheless I believe we can both agree that more money saved towards a GPU is going to make a larger impact on in-game performance for 95% of games :/

Depends, if budget allows for anyone I built for I will fit an overclocking CPU because after some testing it's more performance for a slightly higher energy bill. GPU can only do so much, a system should be balanced well. I get full use of my 970 in games even with an FX 8350.

How much voltage tho?

Don't worry it isn't 24/7 stable it's just my benching overclock, my 5ghz however is stable.

Actually youre right, if I remember correctly the error message is something around the lines of WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, which is actually a RAM error. How do I fix this from happened, OC the RAM?

Update: Upon further research, the most common cause it CPU not being fed enough voltage, which is most likely the issue in my case.
