Oh wow not worth it by a mile... just buy a small formfactor pc and bring it everywhere :P

nowhere near as good as having a laptop, I could never be without a gaming laptop

since I cant power a PC without a wall outlet, and also have to carry a screen, keyboard, mouse, power cables etc

LMAO. OP, of course it's socketed.

PGA means pin grid array and you don't solder pins you put them in a socket. BGA are soldered and pre Haswell (Gen 4) there are many socketed laptops.

You'll have to check how much power and cooling that laptop can provide as the Pentium you have is rated with a 35W TDP while some of the better processors may be 45W. Technically IVB can be supported but it would be very unusual for the laptop manufacturer to do that. Check out the mobile SNB processors, shouldn't be a problem except as already stated about power and cooling. Maybe google and see if someone has already done this.

AWOL

Most laptops, including this one are socketed. It's a pretty big misconception I see a lot on this forum that all laptops are soldered.

CPU world has a good list of CPUs supported by the socket:

Not remotely as practical as a laptop - my Y50 weighs about 2.5kg and takes up as much space as 2 medium books - a SMFF PC would be hell to lug around with a car and on a bus or train

Sandy and Ivy mobile i7s run hot. Very hot. My GT780DXR has an extensive heatsink setup and even it's 2670QM can hit 80C when pinned. 90C if it gets a little dusty.

I do not believe that ThinkPad will run a mobile i7 for very long unless it has a beefier heatsink than I'm assuming it does. And you may be stuck with Sandy Bridge as its unlikely that it even has a bios update to support Ivy Bridge CPUs.

Mobile platforms are abandoned very quickly, even high end ones.

I once upgraded a celeron 900 to a Core 2 Extreme X9000. Some guy sold it to me for £15 lol, everything's the same except TDP was 45 instead of 35. Put decent thermal paste in, it does run fairly hot but never had an issue.
