If you want a surround headset then get virtual surround, not a headset with 7 individual drivers.

I'm using Logitech G35 headset with 7.1 and I can tell you that it's much better than when you turn the 7.1 option off. They sound better than my flatmates HyperX Clouds so yeah. I love the headset, the only flaw is that it's fragile and needs to be handled carefully.

Never tried the speakers.

.speakers Are fine for 7.1 as it is real, and actually 7.1

Simulated surround sound in headsets/headphones is exactly that, simulated, or as some may say, fake. You have 2 ears and headphones generally provide a driver per ear, key component being 2. Now, 7.1 sound takes advantage of a room as well as being away from your ears to simulate all directions, something headphones cannot provide.

If someone says they "prefer" the 7.1 over the stereo audio on their headphone or headset, they simply have no idea what quality audio is and are probably used to gaming brands instead of actual quality audio product.
