I am fairly new to this forum and I am getting started on first NAS build for Home uses like plex media server and file sharing

I have done a barebone NAS build using the pcpartpicker. I already have 2x 2 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm SATA drives for storage and a 120GB SSD for OS and Apps. I will be using those for now. whenever possible i will upgrade to WD Red drives.

here is the link http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xMPFRB for the build i am planning to put together. My Budget is $400 to $500, i will be happy if i can achieve what i need for even less

Main Requirement -  NAS should be able to transcode at least 2 streams of 1080p or 1 stream of 2160p without sweating.

OS - FreeNAS is out of league as it is ZFS and will need ECC ram and the build price will go high. I am thinking of OpenMediaVault or just lightweight linux distro.

Please fill me in with your suggestions or any changes needed to the build above.

Ubuntu is pretty easy to get a Plex server going on. Mine runs off Ubuntu, but it's a virtual machine.

Also, to be perfectly honest, you can probably save yourself the $30 and not get the 212evo. The i3's don't make a ton of heat to begin with, and it's not like your going to be overclocking the thing. The stock heat sink should do more than enough for it. The 212 may be slightly quieter, but neither would need to spin up all that high to keep that chip cool.

Hey there Sreeram5mvn :) welcome to the community!

I could suggest checking out WD My Cloud EX2 and WD My Cloud EX2100 as both of them support PLEX as a third-party app and work great with it. They come with WD Red drives and have many other useful features. :) Here's some more info on that:

Generally  your plan should work too. You could drop the CPU cooler as the CPU comes with a stock one and neither the CPU nor the motherboard allow any overclocking.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions :)

If you are used to windows, spend the money on windows, i tried freenas but bit the bullet and bought windows since i was getting fed up with freenas issues and went with what i know.

Otherwise Ubuntu and Centos are not bad options and are listed on the plex site with a quickstart guide as well
