Extreme virtualization server

Go to solution Solved by Saif-_-Help,

Please don't weast your money for e5 IHAVE deal for e7-4890 v2 for 500$ you save 5500$ because it jade been used for year.

Hey again,

So I'm building extreme virtualization server (esxi), and i need best cpu possible for 400 EUROS,  MAX 450 EUR. (500USD)

Currently I'm wondering this: E5 2683 V3 14 Cores with HT

http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-XEON-Haswell-E5-2683-V3-QEY7-14CORE-2-0-2-6Ghz-stepping1-X99-C610-C612-/191745262498?hash=item2ca4e883a2:g:rdUAAOSwgyxWVAqi

Will it be sufficient for about 20 vm's? Ram 64GB ddr3 or 4, doesn't matter. SSD 1TB.

Thanks in advice!

Yup you see  I need lot's of vm, maybe more ghz or cores. Cause i need like 1GB, 1Ghz, 50mb/s, 10gb ssd, plan, i will be giving access to all cores but only 1GHZ, or if better for someone i give 15GHZ for example.

more ram is always better

i'd go for 4-... gb ram per machine depending on the use

an sql server could easy eat up to 64gb of ram(or more) if the database is big enough

so if i'm not wrong you want to offer them some "servers/platforms" for rent

you need a good internet connection for something like that

Exactly!

and dont forget about the costs of maintenance,

an UPS ( uninteruptable power source ) would be important to, so if the power goes down your server have enough time to shut down and dont get "killed" by the power off (prevent data loss etc)

then you should be aware of stuff like ddos ( a guy i know runs a teamspeak community in austria and they got ddosed like 60GB/second, and their connection died )

Yup, those also. Right now im searching for cpu, as many cores as possible. For 500 USD

i'm just gonna add: home hosting isnt worth it. theres more to putting VMs up for rent than just getting a machine and a decent connection.

i've done the math, with power cost alone you're looking at a monthly cost higher than just renting a box in a datacenter (keep in mind, thats server, and airco for the server, as well as potentially air filtering)

after that comes the internet connection: first off, gigabit wont cut it. and neither will a residential connection. then comes the cost of decent DDoS protection.

then comes maintenance cost and some other small additives.

result: more than you'd pay for a server in a datacenter, and more effort.

Ye... I just like to have my own. And some other reason's i already decided.

Well i don't care what they want to do with them, i just need the best cpu :)

you should care, because its on your machine, in your hose.

if they use it for piracy, thats your responsibility, and thus you're the one they go after.

theres a reason datacenters have a very strict policy about what their servers can and cant be used for (with exceptions like that swedish datacenter that housed TPB for a while, not sure if they're still there)

*blink the eyes* ah i can hear you whispering about a "cloud" for your research data of like discovery channel and steve urwin stuff

manikyath summed it up pretty much, your cost explode for that project

even the rooms that you'll need for the server should be "safe" so none of your mate could get in easy and take or destroy/burn/flood anything

you'll be surprised if you log some of the stuff thats going on what people do...hands down, i think i'll win this bet

Nice! I have garage in my house :D  Impossible to "Destroy, burn, flood" I have about 1500 Euros for this project.

not only that you have to protect the server...the host ( you ) needs protection too,

as manikyath said guard your ships through safe waters and be aware of pirates ...yo ho ho and a bottle of rum

then there's another  important thing

remember what uncle ben said to peter parker... "with great power comes a great bill"

maybe your neighbor gets mad for envy because you offer the vms cheaper

Electricity is like 12cents/kwH. Okay m8 you are funny, really like you, but you see i already decided. It would be max 500watts/not more.
