Best HDD

Hey there :)

As many guys pointed out, it really depends on what you need the drive for. A great performance drive can be a very bad choice for a RAID array. Massive capacity drive that works quiet and cool can be bad for heavy workloads. A NAS drive that works perfectly fine in servers can be a bad choice for a DVR or other surveillance setups.

The boot SSD + HDD for storage is a great idea. Are you planning on doing any RAID arrays for redundancy or performance gains?
I would say if you are not planning on running anything demanding off the HDD - WD Green would be a great choice for secondary storage. If you do plan on running heavier applications off of the HDD - WD Black. For RAID arrays I would suggest checking out WD Red. Here's info on all three drives:

Feel free to as if you have questions :)

It depends what you're using it for. The "best" HDD for a NAS or server application won't be the best to use in a general purpose desktop PC.

No HDD is the best HDD.  Get a SSD.

WD blacks are pretty good for a desktop PC (one of the fastest and a 5yr warranty) there great for a storage drive for games in a pc with a ssd for a boot drive but they can be a bit loud if you have a very quiet system. but if you want to RAID or run more than one drive WD reds would be better.

I'd say a performance balanced drive. It's a WD Blue drive. Sizes available upto 6TB.

Why not?  If you can afford it, SSD's still last longer than HDD's even when used for mass storage.

ESPECIALLY when used for mass storage.  They decay when you write to the a lot.  Reads don't matter one bit.

Only, if they can afford it.

I don't think that a SSD is ideal for storage purpose.

The movie is not gonna be so crystal clear when it's from SSD. :P

At that cost, you can get large spaced HDD and store 3x what you store on SSD.

Exactly.  Mass storage doesn't get written to a lot, it's where you store stuff you rarely use.

Or buy one decent pro rated ssd and use storage spaces or freenas to auto tier/cache a bunch of slow large disks, this is one time where you can have your cake and eat it too :)

8TB HD is $235

960GB (rounded to 1TB) is $180 (on sale)

8 x $180 = $1440

$1440 with no redundant drives meaning if one dies you lose data

4 x $235 = $940 with 3 redundant drives.

It's cheaper and you have 3 layers of redundancy HDs are better for mass storage.

also you could buy 5 1TB WD greens for the same price as the 960gb SSD.
