I recently built my new PC and so far everything works great, but I was just wondering what kind of frame rates I should be getting in different games/benchmarks.

So far I can tell you that in Minecraft while roaming around a planes biome with forests in the distance I get an average of 250-350 FPS. When recording in x264 with OBS my framerate drops down to about 100-150. I saw a youtube video of someone recording in the same type of area but he was getting around 350 FPS with a GTX 970. When recording, he gets my usual non-recording framerate and yet he only has a 970, whereas I have a 390x :/ Can anyone explain this?

I would also like to know what kind of free benchmark tools I should use to test my rig. And when running said benchmarks, what kind of score should I expect with the parts listed in my signature?

EDIT: I didn't consider the possibility that Minecraft is just CPU intensive, rather then GPU intensive. Is this the case? Here is the video I was talking about

His processor is an i7-3770k

Welcome to Minecraft.

When I had my 970s I only ever got like 70fps. Now that I have a 290X I still only get like 100fps. How? I have no clue.

I wouldn't be concerned, Minecraft is absolutely trash in terms of fps consistency in my experience. What are your framerates in games that are capable of running like normal games?

Your processor seems to be a 4790K? To my knowledge that's at least as good as his 3770K so that shouldn't be the cause. I also have a 4790K and that still doesn't explain anything when my friend has a three year old i7 and like a 500 series Nvidia GPU and his fps on Minecraft spanks mine.

CPU Is more important than GPU For minecraft.

wow... lol rip minecraft benchmarking xD

Anyways, what about benchmarks I should download and the scores I should get on them?

I need to apply like 512x512 textures before I can even get my 980 to produce high frame rates.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

Its because Minecraft does not put any load on the GPU. I sit around 10-15% usage while in vanilla textures MC. Running MC is pretty much equivalent to rendering the desktop.

Edit: If I can get the GPU to ~40% usage I get about 1000FPS.

so are you saying if I can some how force minecraft to use the GPU I can get a huge performance boost?

Possibly I haven't used an AMD card since 5xxx so I don't how their lower power states are handled but its probably worth a try.

I had the same thing, i played default textures at 40 fps, then when i added hd texture packs, i got mad fps.  (Gpu: Geforce gt 610.)

My laptop did the same thing.  why  ?

It comes down to power saving. For your laptop you have to make sure that its using the dedicated graphics in the Nvidia control panel otherwise it will use integrated graphics.
