Ok, would a reference 290 be about as good as, say, a nitro 390?

Fallout 4 if you mod, Shadows of Mordor, and the goal is usually not to have "just enough".

You asked a question, why are you arguing the answer?

Because either the answers don't make sense or I want more info. And if vram were not an issue, how much better would a 390 (i.e., a rebranded/refreshed 290) be? Some say not much, yet I see some say a lot.

A 390 are completely different boards than a 290. The chips are similar, but they behave completely different. I own a Vapor-X 290 and Nitro 390.

Vapor-X 290. Lower idle power consumption by 30w, higher load consumption by 40w. Lower fps in synthetic benchmarks by an average of 5%. Runs 10c hotter at load, but VRM run 20c cooler.

Nitro 390. Quieter, an average of 5fps more in games, no LED other than the bios button, nicer back plate.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

390 is slightly better but if you have a 290 then keep it dont upgrade. Or if you can get a killer deal for the 290 then go with  the 290 or even 290x.

Depend, some XFX 390 series use 290 series reference board.
