I have $300 USD to spend this Christmas, and I'm wondering if it would be better to but a 4690k, and a new motherboard, or get a r9 390..

I just don't know how to justify getting a new graphics card so expensive, when my 270X can do almost anything I want.

What do you think I should get? Right now I have an AMD FX-6350, and an R9 270X.

Thanks for the help,

Peter.

I would get a 4690k and a new mobo. That CPU will last you a very long time and right now I think GPU tech is getting very interesting so you can make another upgrade in the next year or so from your 270x.

By the time school end, I should have enough money from my job to get something really nice.

Honestly, it depends on how intensely you game. But personally, the 270x is a pretty good card. I would say upgrade your cpu to maybe a 4790 because amazon has a deal were that is like 250 dollars right now and pick up an asus z97- a mobo,. Hope that helps

$224.99 to be exact. Do you think this motherboard is good? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D1A5OR0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=C8VJULFB3GAB&coliid=I1F4L5X87YFVHK&tag=linustechtips-20

Micro Atx.

Oh okay, yeah I mean gigabyte is a great manufacturer, a great price, good reviews . It looks perfect, the only thing is that make sure your ram is compatible with the mobo, and its a 6 phase power design instead of 8 but the mobo doesn't affect performance, really only overclocking and since your not overclocking I believe its a good choice for the money if you are building on a budget.

It seems like you are fine with your system right now, I would say wait till you can upgrade both because getting the 4690k is not going to be a noticeable upgrade from your current GPU, getting a better GPU will show more if you are primarily gaming, especially going from a 270x to 390x. Then you could make your next upgrade to skylake for example were the jump in CPU performance will be noticeable. Another option is since you said you are fine with your current setup why not put the money into something other than your PC or save it up? New peripherals? New monitor? Little things that might make your setup better assuming you want to change it. Agian jumping from the FX 6350 to the 4690k will not be as big of a performance jump as you might think and I would not recommend doing so unless you have a reason for doing so :)

Actually, I overclock a lot. I like to get that extra performance.

Well, I am already spending some of my other budget on a new mechanical keyboard, but I just got a new monitor so I can't really justify that. Maybe a new desk is in order, seeing that my old one is to small to fit my legs under. So if I was to spend my budget on my pc, what else would you recommend upgrading? I was thinking about buying some old server gear for my cpu, would that be a good investment?

You really won't see a large difference when paired with that GPU though, what do you use you PC for primarily to start with?

SSD will be a large upgrade from that hard drive it looks like you have so if you are a performance freak picking up one will make you super happy, also if you can put server gear to use I would say go for it :)

Well I built it for gaming, editing, and coding along with the usual web browsing.

Yea an SSD will help you a lot, editing (assuming it is video) will benefit from the 2 extra threads that your FX 6350 has over the 4690k keeping it close when it comes to render times for example. Only thing you will really see a difference in when jumping up to that CPU is gaming by a few FPS possibly but not that much.

Well dang :P I guess the new desk? :D

Also if you wanted to save up a little more and go with a 6600k on Skylake or 4790k on Hasewell I think you could benefit from that if your looking for a nice big CPU upgrade.

Would it possible to keep my DDR3 with the 6600k?

You could get that board then buy a nicer board down the road if you decided to move to DDR4 and want to get a better overclock :)

wait I woulden't upgrade yet, because what you have now is ok for 1080p high\medium, and what I would get would be headphone, and a new desk, because I would wait for next years gpus because there should finally be a die shrink, and I would also wait for zen, but maybe not If the new gpus were to good.
