Reapplying thermal paste

baek

Hi guys, I am thinking about reapplying thermal paste to my old but trusty(not really trusty) ASUS ROG G53SW.

The GPU reaches temps of almost 100 C after a game or two of CSGO (lowest settings 640x480 :( )
I am scared of frying anything with static buildup.

I have wooden floors and a wooden table. how can i make sure there will be no static discharge ?

Thanks in advance boys.

Don't wear socks and you'll be fine.

Use Thermal Grizzly, keeps my M15X's overclocked GPU below 65c load.

You rarely need to worry about static, just ground yourself before touching any components.

Wear an anti static band and or touch metal everyone 30 sec, you should be fine on wood.

Dry wood doesn't conduct electricity very well. If you happen to build up static electricity, it will not really discharge to the floor. if you have a PC power supply, you can connect that and touch it very 30ish seconds or whatever, depending on your area. If you have very low humidity, you will want to touch the unit more often than in high humidity areas.

I don't happen to have one, anything else I could be touching ? :)

what are your specs?

thats way too high of a temp after just a couple rounds of cs:go, especially at that resolution.

there might be another reason for the temps other than just thermal paste being dried up

Never mind, its a laptop.  just pay attention to where the screws go. and take pictures as you go along

Make sure you take detailed notes regarding screw placement and be patient. My roommate has the same laptop and we've disassembled it a few times.

Prior to performing maintenance, I like to make sure i'm only wearing cotton clothing and that i wear an ESD strap.

Any metal objects around you that you could use?

I think you'll be fine touching that to discharge yourself.
