Hi, I want to know whether this build is good or if it needs improvements. I am still deciding on whether I should change the cpu to a i7-4790k and the gpu to a GTX 970.

Get a 4690K and a R9-390.

Make sure to also get a stronger PSU and a Z97 MOBO while you're at it.

I do game at 1080p. Which is better though, the GTX 980 or R9-390X? I don't plan on gaming on 1440p as monitors are expensive.

Everyones builds look really good here... Just my suggestion, if you can squeeze a couple more bucks out, you can switch up the gpu for a reference 980ti, which will give you wayyy better gaming performance compared to the 980. Went for a lower cost i5, but I doubt you will see any substantial gaming differences, given that they are almost identical.

I would defiantly go for a z97 MOBO.  That will ensure compatibility with you proc without having to do the BIOS update. There is not really a need to upgrade your Proc unless you plan on doing some content creating (photo/video editing). I would also get an SSD for your boot drive.
