Dual CPU. Help

Go to solution Solved by Lotus,

It's not strait forward at all. You have to get a dual socket motherboard, and most CPUs do NOT support running in dual socket. Each generation has a specific sub-set of Xeon CPUs that can do it, and only those CPUs will work. IE: you can't run two i7-920 CPUs in dual socket. Lastly, in order to fully make use of it, IIRC you need an enterprise/professional version of Windows or you wont be able to really use the second CPU as the home/regular Windows doesn't support dual socket.

It's a headache in a handbasket with plenty of hidden costs. It's do-able if you're knowledgeable, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who doesn't already know how.

Wat do I need ti know befor I by a CPU for a dual CPU rigg?

Considering your spelling, I doubt you need a dual CPU rig

What do you want a dual CPU computer for? its unnecessary for 99.99% of stuff people do

You need to get 2 of the same exact CPU or it won't work. Other than that it's pretty straight forward.

You need a dual CPU motherboard. Most everything is the same as a single CPU system.

If you want to follow linus video on it I'd suggest going with lga1366 as the price is similar but the compatibility is a lot better. I was running 2x 6 core cpu on a intel s5520sc motherboard. Which is just basic workstation board. Changed it for evga sr2 for overclocking

EVGA SR-2 / 2x Intel Xeon X5675 4.4Ghz OC / 24GB EEC 1800Mhz OC/ AMD RX570 / Enermax Evoliution 1050W / Main RAID 0: 2x256GB 840EVO SSD / BackUp(1) Raid 5: 3x2TB WD HDD / BackUp(2) 8x2TB / Dell U2412M / Dell U2312HM

I'm working with 3D CG most, and planing on building a work station with at least 12 cores.

if a 5960x 8 core is not enough intel do 12 core and 18 core Xeons

If you think that it is cheap preformens you get from paying extra for a CPU with 18 or 12 cores do it sund grate. But if you dig arund a bit can you by three 6 core CPU instead of one 12 core.

I will sum it up in 1 sentence.  You need to get 2 identical CPUs compatible with the motherboard and make sure the motherboard supports REGULAR DDR3 not just ECC DDR3.
