You don't HAVE to, but yes, just get the same kind. If I have a 1x4GB Module of Kingston HyperX Fury Ram that tuns at 1333 MHZ, I would personally get the same set. It doesn't really matter in the end though. However, get the same speed of RAM, otherwise your PC will use the slowest speed you have for all sticks.

hello I'm looking to upgrade my ram to 16gb and am wondering if I have to get the same exact ram as I have in currently have in my system which is 2x4 8gb.. this may be a stupid question but I am assuming you don't have to get the same exact ram...

What Stefanopolis said was right. You don't have to get the same model or even the same speed, but keep in mind that if you get lower speed the pc will automatically run at the lower speed. And i say get the same set just for aesthetic reasons, but if you can get a crazy deal nothing is stopping you. Though keep in mind the latency might affect your decision on it.
