Windows 7 license

I'm using a laptop hard drive (I'll upgrade it later) with Windows 10 on it in a desktop. It works but says the license doesn't work so I need to buy a new license key. Could I use a Windows 7 license or would I need a Windows 10 one.

in theory you can use a win 7 key

If the license key came with the laptop then no. Those OEM keys are tied to the laptop and cannot be transferred. If you want to get Windows on your desktop then you have to buy a new copy either brand new from NCIX or NewEgg or buy a grey market copy from https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap/ but if the seller gets caught then you lose your money and your key.

You can still buy a Windows 7 key and upgrade to 10, Windows 7 keys are cheaper on MicrosoftSoftwareSwap.
