Curious behavior following CPU upgrade

Go to solution Solved by airdeano,

how long did you run the stress test? yes this is normal the more threads

are present.

load is determined to amount of work/processes are being applied. not all

threads are being loaded all at one time (lack of 100% line). the app is

developed by intel, i'd think they know a bit to "stress" their products.

So today I upgraded my younger son's computer - swapping out a G3258 and Evo 212 for a 4690k and a Cryorig H7.

Before doing the upgrade I did a quick stress test run with iXTU - CPU only.  The CPU was Oc'd to 4.4 GHz at 1.35 volts.  The CPU utilization went straight up to 100% and stayed rock steady for the duration.  Max temps were in the low 60's.

I reset the BIOS to stock settings, then installed the new CPU & cooler.  After confirming everything was kosher in the BIOS (stock setting with XMP enabled as before) I then repeated the iXTU run.  There were no errors, or other problems but the CPU utilization was jumping around from 95-100% utilization for the entire run.  Instead of that nice flat line as before it looked like a random sawtooth.  Max temps were in the low 50's (remember - no OC) iXTU reported no thermal throttling.

This is my first time using iXTU with an i5.  Is this sort of CPU utilization behavior normal?

It does not seem to be a problem but holiday activities prevented me from running any sort of benchmarks or even repeating the stress testing.

The MoBo is an ASRock Z97 Pro4 if that matters.

Run was only 15 minutes, was more of a "did I screw anything up before proceeding" than anything else.  That answer makes perfect sense, especially going from a pentium to an i5.

Yep, I got the same thing with mine which is why I don't use XTU. I use AIDA64.

Glad to hear I'm not alone.  I too like AIDA64, and have it installed on my own system.  Had it on this one too, but the demo period expired, so iXTU it was.

Thak you both for the rapid and helpful replies.
