my pc is having a really bad hard lockup with no bsod randomly thru out the day and i did over clock my northbridge and forgot about but it but i put it back to stock speeds and i may have blown the northbridge out so im curious can the northbridge cause system lockups with out bsod

I can't image your computer would run at all, let alone post if the northbridge were shot. Could be wrong though.

Did you OC it? Also how far?! (remember the 212 Evo does not cool the motherboard...)

So you've set everything back to stock, yes?

Check Windows Event Viewer to see what the critical error is? It may give you something vague, but it might also have a clue or two.

Check your drives SMART readings?

i overclocked the northbridge to about 2800mhz from 2200 but put it back down to stock after all the bluescreens i was having which i did forget that i over clocked the northbridge thinking it was windows 10 causing my problems lol

its not a error is a system file filter causing my problem

Hmm well the Northbridge does handle SATA channels, so you could have an issue.

That being said it could simply be an issue in Windows itself. I haven't had file system corruption with Windows 7 personally, but I experienced a lot of issues with Windows 10 when updates didn't complete properly.

im starting to think it is my northbridge after all the bluescreens i was having for a few months after updating to windows 10 and thinking it was windows 10 and relized that my northbridge was overclocked when i downgraded to windows 8.1 and got bluescreens on there and never had issues before on that OS

Yeah if it travels to different OS versions then hardware is suspect.

Have you run Memtest86 for a few passes just to eliminate that possibility?

well i did somthing better i stole my wifes ram and put it in mine and put mine in hers and it still freezes with her ram

 

hmm very true with the os but i may get another hdd and put 8.1 on my system and work from there i want to keep it in the same kind of envierment and so i can keep playing games lol

Lol good thinking. At this point the last thing to rule out is the hard drive or SSD failing. If it is still an issue after that then yeah, I'd say your motherboard is failing.

Personally I wouldn't spend the money til I was absolutely sure it was necessary. At this point it's still possible your SSD is going bad. Hell it could be the SATA cable, I've had those degrade over time.

Well first things first, replace your SATA cables. Peace of mind kind of thing.

Next you're going to need a spare hard drive. Doesn't have to be another ssd or even a large drive. Just big enough to hold windows and obviously working with no issues.

Install windows on that drive and use it normally. Run a stresstest or two. If no freezing occurs put your secondary drive back in. Repeat the tests.

If no crashes happen then it's likely your SSD is starting to fail. If a crash happens with your secondary drive connected then that drive is likely going to fail. And lastly if it still locks up with just your test hard drive in place then I'd say you're gonna need a new motherboard.

Lol there's usually a silver lining to a failing component. Not always of course.

You can use a laptop hard drive or simply buy a cheap one and use it as a spare later. If you can backup the data on your secondary drive you can just use it as well.

ya very true computers is a expencive hobby lol i just replaced the sata cable and its still flipping out and now its rebooting on me even before replacing it its a new simtume or how ever you spell it lol now its time to do the spare hdd now bt you think i should go back to 8,1 or stick with windows 10
