Will a GTX 980 work on this motherboard?

It only goes up to PCI 8x 3: It would bottleneck the card a bit but it should fit.

Hello I am building a "new" gaming PC using 2 Xeon x5460s, 16gb RAM, a 750 or 1000 watt power supply and hopefully a GTX 980. My only problem is that I a unsure if the Modo I am looking at will be compatible with a GTX 980. I am looking at getting a SuperMicro X7DCL-3 Motherboard.

Thank you for you help and sorry for the awful format of this thread.

Probably but get an R9 Fury. Only $10 more on average

I would but I am getting a 980 for 400.

Too many bottle necks..

I am not sure if you know what you are doing... can you explain what this PC would be used for?

I mean for many uses there are cheaper and better options

I don't think so the the 8x gen 1.0 pcie slot is slow but it would not slow it down to much since I am only using a 1080p monitor and and going to be using it for an all purpose PC. Also the two Xeon X5460s are not the fastest but would not bottleneck the GPU to much. Also for the two CPU's 16gb RAM and Mobo it's only 112 USD. Linus released a video on Vessel about it.  In his video he used two lower end Xeon's and even they could not bottleneck the a GTX 980 in games and he had games like Battlefront cranked to ultra on 1080p. The storage would be slow but I can live with that. Then again I am open to suggestions. What would you suggest?

You look that you know what you are doing and thats a good thing :)

I was a bit worried as I dont like anything to be slow in a system but if you are ok with that, that is the important thing

but I cant suggest anything without knowing what you want to use this PC mainly for (gaming- rendering -video editing-etc)
