Did i damage my cpu?

So basically i put my 4790k CPU in the tray, it dropped into place from like 1 1/2 cm high. Did i hurt it? I also was stupid and i turned the PC on for 2 minutes with out a cooler thinking it would not cause damage. i removed the CPU and put it in again and now it says windows failed to start. but i can get into bios.    how do i chack to make sure i didnt damage my cpu

EDIT: i saw the temp at 87c. and when i tried to load windows it probably went over 100c

You didn't damage it. But your windows installation sounds fucked (unrelated)

CPUs are more resilient than you'd think.

I've dropped a Xeon X5450 from a worktop (1.5 meters ish) and its fine.

Just sounds like your Windows is borked.

dropping it even from like 3 ft probably wouldn't hurt it - turning it on without a heatsink is retarded though

I doubt you damaged it, most likely something else is an issue

You CAN run a cpu without a cooler, it's 100% fine as long as it doesn't reach dangerous temps (which is easy with basic use). But just trying to get into the bios and stuff should be fine.

i looked no damage but i touched the pins a few times.....    if my pc displays my mobo splash screen i am fine?

touching the pins is okay too. Yeah, your pc is posting, can you get into the bios screen? Or the boot menu?

I dropped my FX-6100 onto the carpet from about 1.6m. Pins be bent, but back straight up with the help of a pair of tweezers.

That was scary...
