Hello everyone,

I have been using pc's  since i was 8yo,  like to tinker around the settings  of every component since then... I don't consider myself a savant but  i think i have  enough exp and knowledge  while i'm in my 34 :)   One thing  i just can't  solve  is the  overclocked gpu effects on some game  engines. For ex:  Fallout 4  crashes  everytime  i oc  even a little bit...not that i need it  on a 980 classified  but i like the feeling like everyone else :) On the other hand   some other title  handles  extreme amounts of oc   like a pro.  This example  i can give you over  tens of titles with different engines. So far no sweetspot as far as i can see.  Another thing is,  since i'm a heavy nvidia user,  those game ready drivers are bugging  me a lot. Can they be the culprit? Nvidia dishes out GR drivers  eachtime a new title is released,  optimised for those specific title engines. Can it be the problem that causes oc instabilities? (But then why Fallout 4 crashes with its specific GR drivers?) So many questions and confusion packed in a not-so-good-lookin box :)

Open to suggestions and  waypoints;  thanx in advance...

Did the OC fail with non-GR drivers on the same game?  If they did, and GR drivers still crashed, then it's just the engine.  Different engines stress different parts of the GPU, that's why benchmarks and stress tests are only a quick and dirty way to test OC stability.  It gives you an easy repeatable platform to test, but the true test is always games since that's what you will be doing with the PC, not just run benchmarks all day long.

WoW doesn't like GPU OC's.  The rest seems fine to me so far, although I have no idea about FO4 cos it's a game I will never play.

Hello, @Loscohones and welcome to the forums!

I don't think your Fallout 4 crashes are related to the GPU's OC. My r9 270x is beefed up to 1120 MHz and I've had no issues so far.

I had noticed that Windows 10 didn't really like any kind of OC for about a month or so after upgrading from 8.1, however both my CPU and my GPU are OC'd and stable as a rock (24h stability tests and all) even after week-long uptimes.

Back to the Fallout 4 crashes: please be aware that Bethesda is still working of fixing out infancy bugs and issues and nVidia is working on stable, proper drivers, aswell. It could just be a driver issue for now

Unigine benchs  are runing flawlessly  in  high oc conditions no prob.  I have played  fallout 3 and new vegas  with the same gpu ( like to play older games  from time to time as well :) )  again the oc  failed on those much older  titles.....Bethesda  is a problematic  company  i know :)   Each time i have to  remember  which game  handles oc well and  not.. Have over 180 titles on steam...imagine the  agony :P

Some engines just don't like OC's, can't really do much about that :P  Unigine is a benchmark, and not what you do every day.  It's just something you use to do a quick check.  If turning off your OC works fine in Bathesda games, just means either your OC isn't stable or the engine doesn't deal well with OC's.

Unigine benchmarks are for giggles and bragging rights. If you want to know if you're stable run Firestrike.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

idtech  engine is a problem too....but id soft   backstabbed pc users  since rage...a lot of games are console ports  today...even F4!   so maybe   that is to blame...pure pc games  have minimum issues  like oc.

Really has nothing to do with whether they are pure PC games or not.  WoW is a pure PC game.  Like I said, could be your OC stability.  Being stable in A and not in B another doesn't mean B is any worse a product than A.  It just means your OC isn't stable.  Stable = stable across everything, not 1-2 things.

I can run 1140MHz in Valley easy, but see artifacts in Fallout 4. For me at least I run a mild overclock in games and save the big overclocks for playing around with benchmarks. Unless you're running a crazy resolution with your monitor, mild overclocking nets you better results.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

True...but that means i just can't push limits on all titles...A few years ago  i upraged my single 660 Oc edition to an SLI,  without  user oc,  the difference was like night and day. I don't know....maybe i should do the same  with 980 classified  and  get away from the hassle.

Not a fan of 4k or similar rez.  1080p  with good amounts of AA  is enough quality and fps for me for now :)

Same here, dial back the overclock and go for stability. And nothing that I know of can make Fallout 4 stable at the moment lol.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Keep shadow distance at medium, amb occ off (no mighty visual difference for me),  and shadow quality at high....try going up from there ;)  cant believe  that everytime  a bethesda title is released these things just  repeat themselves..even when the engine has nothing to be proud on visual quality :S

Putting the shadow distance to medium works because that's the setting for the PS4 and Xbox. Changes the appearance of the game past a point I find acceptable. So I made the choice to live with a few fps dips verses run console settings. It's my vanity at play.

i play fo3 and new Vegas at 1450mhz on my 980 and haven't had any issues with it. I kinda know what you mean though. Borderlands titles like to crash my cpu overclock despite it passing months of constant use with other programs
