Semi budget GPU options

Vegetable

Alright, so this christmas my brother is buying me a GPU. He said he doesn't care how much as long as it's not over $300.

I'm thinking r9 390 or Gtx 970, IDC which. The best priced 390 atm is the MSI 8G, which I think is gorgeous, and the only decently priced 970 is the 970 Turbo from ASUS, which is nice for SLI, but for single GPU use I think it's a dumb buy. What do you guys think? I know with black friday approaching faster than ever, I should for sure wait until then to make my decision. Should I try extra hard to get a certain 970 for a particular reason, or vice-versa for a 390? I would love some input, and if anything I said is unclear, please ask away! Thanks :D

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

I would go for the MSI 390. They are great cards and outperform the 970 at higher resolutions.

My vote is for the Sapphire Nitro OC with the Backplate. Just over 300us if you get it now with the rebate and it's an amazing card.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

get a r9 390, because its the same performance, and its less (usually), and my preference (just from looks). is that any 3 fan card looks sexy af.

Edit: also on newegg more then half of the 390 cards are under $300

What makes it better than the MSI card?

Cooling, that's about it. The Nitro stays cooler than a Vapor-x, I have both and that shocked the shit out of me.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

But does it also stay cooler than the MSI card?

The MSI 8G is thicker and has larger fans.

Btw.: The cooling isn't the only thing that is better about the Nitro. It does also have a better I/O.

I'm going off Tech Showdown on the temps for the MSI. But the MSI is still a great example of the 390.
