Dual CPU Budget $200(Linus's Budget Dual CPU Build Inspired)

I was inspired to do a dual Xeon build when Linus hinted his own $150 build on WAN Show 11/20 and on his Instagram(links below.) So anyways, I had another post in CPUs, Motherboard, and Memory since it fit there, but then quickly escalated... So now, I am building a test bench to fit up to an E-ATX board just solely to fit this server board, just because I can. I am going to post the specs I have at this point.

 

 

Specs:

CPUs: Dual Xeon E5640 @2.66GHz Turbo to 2.9GHz

Motherboard: Foxconn 02010HE00-600-G

Memory: Hynix 16GB 4x4GB PC3-10060R CL9 ECC @1333MHz

Cooling: Two LGA1366 stock heatsinks

 

All other components I have on hand. My power supply I have right now is a PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK II 750 watt.

 

I spent most of yesterday trying to find parts for this build. I used the picture of Linus's build to base this off of. I figured that if he was going on a $150 budget, it was going to be an older socket. I knew that LGA775 was too old, so I decided to go with LGA1366. I originally wanted to use two Xeon w5590s, but I didn't have enough power on my first motherboard choice. I decided to go with some 80 watt CPUs and a more decent motherboard. The motherboard is about $60, and the CPUs come bundled together for $35. These two together should score higher than an i5-4690k in Passmark. The memory is about $40. You may be able to tell, nothing I am getting is new. Well, there is one connector, but that doesn't count. The motherboard I am using has two 8 pin power connectors, but these processors will only be using around 160 watts under load, unlike the others using up to 260 watts. Not much to say about the memory, except I do want to use ECC. I have found some 6-32 inserts for the standoffs that will be used in the test bench. I was surprised to see the stock heatsinks to be so much, but then again. If anyone else has any input or advice for me, feel free to let me know. This is going to be a fun project. I will be updating with pictures when this build starts, and it is a definite go. I just need to order the parts and get the bench ready. It will start in December sometime.

So what are you going to do with this build? Are you going to be making some kind of server, or will you try to use this for gaming/normal desktop stuff?

 

Edit: Also do you know where I can buy these parts? I'm starting to regret my own parts decisions as I drool over the thought of dual xeons.

Personally, I've been eyeing the Supermicro X8DTT-F for a while now, but is there a reason why you've specifically chosen the Foxconn board?

I was hoping not many people asked about where I was getting these parts lol. There are many LGA 1366 Xeons that are out there. Just make sure the motherboard can handle the CPUs and the power needed for them. I was searching Ebay, and I was restricted by price. Don't let this stop you. Reuse whatever parts you can that are sufficient(preferably more than sufficient.)

 

The reason I have chosen the Foxconn board is because I could choose the HP board available, with one 4 pin CPU power, and insufficient mounting options for CPU cooling(which I mentioned in my post above.) The HP board was only ready for manufacturer passive heatsinks, which aren't available to me, nor can they handle the environment I would put them in. I am limited to available affordable LGA 1366 dual socket boards, which is kind of the point of the build.

I have figured out that Linus's is running on an LGA771 board, because the sockets are so close to each other. I guess I just found some better deals at the time for an LGA1366 board and a pair of processors.

Probably reviving a dead post but why are you using e5640's? I'm doing the same build basically and I'm using x5550 they clock better in dual and mine were cheaper. They don't clock much better mind you, I think they score 9200. How has the build gone? Does the Foxconn board work well? Does it fit in a standard case?

Hi guys i have the same motherboard and I'm not sure if the board is able to see the full 1333 Mhz frequency of the memory all though the MB is detecting all 8 GBs. how do I make it use all of the 1333 Mhz? Also how did you OC your CPUs? please let me know  many thanks
