My freind has the aleinware x51 http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r3/pd?oc=dpcwxy03h&model_id=alienware-x51-r3 and would like to case swap to add upgrades later on, what should he buy if he wanted to case swap to a mid tower ATX case?

Everything seems swappable except the PSU, so tell him to get a new PSU.

He should buy a slap in the face, a sanity check, a therapist, and a teacher.

Or just a mid-tower case that he likes the look of...

Intel Core i7-6700K | Corsair H105 | Asus Z170I PRO GAMING | G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB | 950 PRO 512GB M.2

Asus GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB STRIX OC | BitFenix Prodigy (Black/Red) | XFX PRO Black Edition 850W

I'm here to help! Seriously I have an X51 myself...

For a case swap first you need a new power supply as the external one doesn't work with any other PC.

You'll also need the case duh, I recommend an elite 130, SG13, or 250D.

If you're going to buy an ATX case, you won't have much expansion as you're using an ITX board, but that's your call, I would have bought another ITX case

Quick note, the IO shield is built into the case itself, so call Alienware and double check to see if they have a standard IO shield for you

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

So...

PSU

Case

Motherboard (Just because its easier)

If you're going to get a new motherboard it could be costly, and it'd be cheaper to get a new IO shield from Alienware if they have any

His motherboard apears to be a standard mITX motherboard, so it should fit in a standard ATX Case.

His PSU will probably need to be replaced, but I would have to look into that to be certain.

board isn't swap-able.

I had a x51.

Youi need a new case, PSU, motherboard.

Noooope. You'd need new PSU, Case, and motherboard. x51 motherboard doesn't let a new GPU in it, it has a capacitor in the way of it.
