I just watched a video of a guy playing gta 5 with the super realistic mod at 4k on a gtx 970 and he was getting good fps, so is 8gb vram a bit overkill or is it still necessary?

red flags

that is not how things work,,,

maybe with 4-Way SLI...

but 8GB of VRAM on a 970 does not exist... nor 6... only 4 (3.5 +.5)

edit:

not to mention the 970 was made for maxing 1080p *for the most part*

Too much is obviously better that too little but will 4 gb be enough or is 8gb necessary despite heat, noise, drivers, feautes

I run 60c overclocked to 1140MHz on my 390. So no heat issue there.

I have never heard my Nitro's fans, no noise issue there.

The drivers have been hit and miss for both AMD and Nvidia.

And it's 3.5, not 4. Playing Fallout 4 with a few mods I hit 3156 max on memory used today. That's pretty damn close to the 3.5 of usable VRAM of the 970.

So

If anyone asks you never saw me.

So is the r9 390 trix oc overall a better or equal card in drivers, features, heat, marketing etc. for gaming and modding?

Really depends on the games you play. If you play a lot of different games, the 390 is a much better choice. If you play only a few games and those games are Gameworks games, then the 970 is worth considering, but Fallout 4 is a Gameworks game and the 390 will do a much better job with modding Fallout 4. So I'd say the 390 is the obvious choice but it's not my money it's yours.

What are some popular gameworks games? I will be playing many different games like gmod, witcher, bo2 and 3, kerbal, watchdogs, minecraft etc.

I play Witcher 3 and get over 50fps all the time on ultra settings, including Hairworks. I haven't seen a game the 390 won't max at 1080p, but I always try to be fair which is why I say the 970 is worth considering. Sitting here playing Fallout 4 paused typing this on my phone my 390 is using 2833MB of memory. That's 35% of it's available VRAM, but that's 71% of the available advertised VRAM of the 970.

Do you really need more evidence of which card is better for modding games?

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Don't know about you but I've used up 4GB before with Watch Dogs at ultra details (MSAA maxed). It's 4GB VRAM, jesus.

Are you bragging about running out of VRAM, or in support of 4g not being enough for modern games?

I'm stating that there is infact 4GB's of VRAM. You previously stated there is only 3.5GB's, which isn't really correct. Watch Dogs has been the only game to really eat up that much VRAM though but it's mostly because of MSAA x8. Playing it without MSAA, it's around 3GB's and stable 60fps. Just sayin'

And I bet amd will have fantastic drivers out soon

Me too. My AMD experience in the past has been awful (I use to run two R9 270x's). Having to wait months for any new driver to come along wasn't the most fun thing in the world. Might switch back to AMD when they release the new drivers with the fancy control panels :P.

Tons or topics about that, it's there but doesn't perform as it should.

You mean Crimson? Should be any day now, half expected it to come out last Friday. Trixx is more important anyway as it gave me an additional 40MHz over where Afterburner went.

It's there. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Regardless, it's pretty rare for me to even see more then 3.6GB's used.

I meant Crimson, yup. Does Trixx have OSD support like Afterburner? Wanted to try Gigabytes OC software to see if I can get any higher. Running 1510MHz @ 1.212v, it's pretty chill :P.

Afterburner is good, but tends to cause artifacts way before any other software I have used. Now that you can adjust the voltage Trixx is awesome. Fallout 4 is the biggest VRAM hog I've found yet. I can only imagine how bad it will be once the mods really start rolling in.

It is? For me, Fallout 4 hasn't even gone into the 3GB range yet and I'm running it ultra 1080p o-o.
