Built a new pc a little while ago

Specs:

Gigabyte were nice enough to include a feature on their 980ti where the fans turn off when the GPU is idle.

However with my new PG279Q running at 1440p/165Hz it puts the GPU under just enough load that when the system is idle/web browsing the GPU fans constantly spin up and then turn off again, every 2 seconds or so.

I confirmed this by setting the resolution to 1080p in the nvidia control panel and the GPU fans immediately stopped spinning and temps went from 59C to 50C and still dropping.

You would have thought gigabyte would have thought of this, seeing as the 980ti is hardly aimed at people with 1080p monitors.

Is there a way to adjust the GPU fan curves without having to download gigabyte's crappy bloatware?

Yes.  Download MSI Afterburner.  You can set custom fan curves and overclock the card, which I highly reccomend.

Just tried it

Temps just creep up to the new threshold and then the fan starts pulsing again.

Seems like the card just can't dissipate enough heat when the fans aren't spinning to stop the temperatures rising

That's because the GPU will cool itself until it can turn off the fan again.  Otherwise, the GPU will keep getting hotter.

Yeah I realise that now, I thought the temps would stabilise at some point but it looks like it would just keep creeping up.

I've set the fan to stay at 30% (any lower and it starts to pulse) until the card reaches 65C. It hovers around 60C now while browsing, might be going a little lower.

Not an ideal solution but better than listening to that horrible noise

Out of curiosity, I noticed that you have an Asus motherboard. Did it come with the AI software suite? if so it may be worth it to change your case fan profiles to push a little more air through your case. May help keep those temps down enough to keep your cards fans off while browsing. It wouldn't take a huge increase in case fan speed either. Just a thought.

Been testing this out, it turns out quieter to just keep the gpu fans at 30% when idle than to ramp up the case fans enough to be able to keep gpu fans off. Thanks for the help though
