I just turned off my system to install a new dust filter on one of my fans and when I turned it off suddenly turned back on, back off and back on again to tell me that I needed to reset the, what I think was, motherboard settings to default as it had a problem. This then caused my CPU to downclock to 3.5ghz from 4ghz.

Now when I booted up my CPU was at 100%, it has now gone down to 20% so it may have just been due to boot up.

What could have happened?

Okay, looking at task manager it says my maximum speed is 3.5ghz but its reaching 3.75+ at times. What is going on?

Wat dat

you should see a watch battery in the motherboard, usually around the PCI slots.

with the PC and PSU off, take it out, wait 10 seconds, and put it back in in the same orientation, it will reset your BIOS.

i has a similar issue of a boot-failure reboot cycle, this fixed it.

it could also be your previous OC was greatly increasing perofrmance

I'll reboot again and see if it does a similar thing, not sure if it was just a one off.

That's what I was thinking but it's still reaching higher speeds then 3.5 for some reason? I'm so confused

Rebooted, went into bios, selected optimization defaults. Speed is still reaching higher than 3.5 in task manager yet it says the max is 3.5?
