CPU socket question

Go to solution Solved by incarnate,

So at some point I plan to upgrade my computers old AM2 cpu, and I had assumed I would have to upgrade the motherboard too. However I just found out that it is actually an AM2+, not an AM2. I thought I had read somewhere that AM2+ sockets had compatibility with some newer CPU's's so I was wondering if it would actually be possible to get something a little more modern without having to replace the motherboard? The motherboard has worked for me fine so far, so it would be nice to just keep it if possible.

Anything for am2+ would be horribly out of date, the best being early phenom II cpus. It would be better to get a new motherboard and cpu in all honesty

AM2 and AM2+ are interchangable, as far as i understand.

how much do you have to spend on a new CPU/motherboard (maybe) anyways?

Different PCPartPickers for different countries:

UK-----Italy----Canada-----Spain-----Germany-----Austrailia-----New Zealand-----'Murica-----France-----India

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

In that case, I'le probaly just upgrade the motherboard then. Just making sure that no newer stuff is compatible with am2+. Thanks for the quick response!

Np. Yeah early phenom IIs and their associated athlons are the newest cpus compatible. What's your budget for the upgrade and what country do you live in. I'm sure we could help you find the best bang for the buck upgrade

No budget at the moment. I'm spending all my budget on a new graphics card and PSU. I'le just make a new post in a couple months when I have money to upgrade the cpu and motherboard, this was more of me just planning ahead.
