Need help installing Ubuntu alongside Elementary OS

Go to solution Solved by Albatross,

If Elementary OS is still there, you didn't erase it. If you want to erase the drive and do so for sure (without reinstalling anything), load up into your Ubuntu drive or a LiveUSB and open (may need to install) Gparted. Locate the drive with Elementary OS on it and then eradicate it from existence with the "delete" options (make sure the drive you don't want erased is disconnected just in case). And then you can install on it or do as you please.

Next time, if you wish to dual boot, install Ubuntu first and then pop in the install disc for the other distro and select the second drive that you wish to install on. Install as normal (do not pick "alongside" if your intent is to install on individual drives) and then reboot. If you do not see a selection screen, boot into whichever distro it allows you to and then install boot-repair and then run the recommended option. It will adjust and fix your grub so that you have a selection screen. You may, at this point, have to change the BIOS boot order but that's about it.

I have a slight problem. I previously had both Elementary OS and Ubuntu installed on my PC, and both of them were working fine. Today I was trying to switch my operating systems from one drive to another. I got Elementary OS on the new drive, no problem. Then I erase the data on the drive that previously had my two operating systems, still no problem. Then I went to put Ubuntu on the same drive, and everything seemed fine. I went through the install process. I installed it on the same drive as Elementary OS making sure not to overwrite it. When I went to reboot, Ubuntu didnt come up as an option. This was kinda weird, I didnt know what to do but I decided I'd rather just have Ubuntu if its not going to let me dual boot them, so I went through the installation process again and told it to just overwrite Elementary OS. Again, when I went to reboot Ubuntu wasnt an option, however I figured surely Elementary OS wouldn't come up either because I told Ubuntu to overwrite it. Yet somehow Elementary OS still opened up as if nothing had happened...

Does anyone know why Elementary OS has just taken over my computer? I've never had this problem before. I suppose I could just dissconnect the drive its written on and install ubuntu on another drive, but I dont want to lose use of that hard drive.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Have grub scan your computer for new boot options after you boot into elementary. I would also make sure that you are installing it on the correct drive. If you wan't just Ubuntu in the end boot from the live cd/usb and format your drive.

Thanks, that seems to have solved the problem.
