Looking for Advice

Go to solution Solved by FixedDevice,

If i was looking to Overclock the 6700K what would be a good modest overclock that wouldnt cut too much into the lifespan of the CPU, also what would be a good Cooler for that?

is the 212 Evo a good enough cooler to handle basic overclocking?

Definitely. It's the go-to budget cooler and really does the job well.

If you're worried about lifespan, think of it this way: Yes, overclocking does have a tendency to lower a CPU's lifespan, although you have to overclock in small increments in order to ensure safe durability. Overclocking should definitely not make you worried as the lifespan difference is not really noticeable.

Hello, this is my first time posting here, but i have been asking around and getting a lot of mixed commentary, i am not entirely sure how to proceed so any advice would be quite welcomed.

I am looking to try and upgrade my PC, but too be truthful, i want to get the most "bang" for my buck out of the types of things i do, which for the majority is gaming, both singleplayer current release titles at highest settings and mmo gaming Blade and Soul being a major focus for me., game emulation, a ton of multitasking with music players, browsers, multiple game clients, and some times watching a video while gaming. I am hopeful to try and get into streaming in the future. but right now i just do not feel i have the net speed for it.

My PC build is as follows.

Case NZXT Phantom (Original)

Mother Board Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Revision 4

CPU AMD 6350 (no over clock) Stock cooler

Ram 8x2 Gskill TridentX DDR3 1600 7 cas

GPU Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X Edition (8 gig ram)

PSU EVGA Supernova 1050 Watt Gold

SSD Intel 730 240gig

HDD 1tb Western digital Blue

Running two moniters, an Asus throw away (not that good, 1920x1080

and primary moniter is a Samsung S24C650 1920x1200.

i have roughly a 900$ budget, and was trying to consider my options for a good upgrade, even considering moving to Intel 6700K, with a Gigabyte Gaming 7 MB and 16 gigs of ram.

but as i said, i really would like some input on what would be the best bang for the buck in noticeable upgrade. and if skylake is the best upgrade a good non overclock cooler that would fit in my case.

You might be able to get a r9 390. i5- is better for med-high end builds and you dont need a 1050w psu a 650-850 will do fine

edit: nevermind misread

Whats the point of getting a 6700k if you dont OC it?

I was under the impression the K series of the 6700 had a higher base clock to the normal. thus would preform better even if not overclocked.

Secondary question, can a 390 cross fire with a 290X?

It has got a higher base clock but its a waste of money if you dont really do anything with it a a non k 6700 would be fine the difference would be marginal. if you dont OC that is

SInce you are you doing significant upgrades, I would have taken this opportunity to quiet down the system

If skylake is what you're going for,go ahead and get a CM 212 evo

I would also consider selling the 290x for a 390x/980 ti

  • Since you were going through the trouble of changing it all up,I was just recommending to Sell that and go for a newer card that fit your budget (As the resale value tend to drop quickly,if you are bothered about that)
  • If you fancy crossfire,it is an option too.
  • As for the silence (If you prefer a silent computer) ,since you're upgrading now you could consider selecting parts, that would end you up with a quieter computer

For example if you get a aftermarket cooler, sure you got yourself more overclocking headroom but you can also take that as a setting a custom fan curve bit lower compared to using a stock one (Either way Skylake K CPU's don't come with a OEM cooler anyway) as from my experience CPU coolers tend to be the loudest thing, unless if you get the more expensive option (Don't think it's worth the extra money, just for a quieter system xD

Selling it? is my 290X worth a 980Ti O.o?

Sorry if i am not very knowledgeable, i have more or less been building as i go with out putting too much thought into the end product till now. as is likely noticeable.

I have not considered overclocking due to well always being told overclocking will make the parts degrade at a faster rate then leaving them at their base clock speed.

Sorry my bad nope but was just pointing out the possibilities.

As for overclocking, like FixedDevice said it's it isn't noticeable,by the time that happens the CPU will be absolute by then.
