CAT 5e has enough bandwidth for your connection, and is the most common right now. If it's just a patch lead, then it doesn't really matter, provided it's not a very long cable, but if you're wiring everything up, CAT6 would be what I'd go for.

For 10/100/1000 Mbps connections there is no difference between Cat 5e through to Cat 7a. Higher Cat standards really only matter for 10Gbps+ connections.

The Cat 7 and higher standards are not even certified yet just so everyone knows. Also they use screened and foiled cabling which is a real pain to work with and if you damage the cable it can have extremely bad side effects, ground loops etc. You also have to use properly grounded patch panels. Cat 6a is as high as you currently want to go.

Cat 5e 1Gbps, up to 100M

Cat 6 1Gbps, up to 100M

Cat 6a 1Gbps, up to 100M

Cat 7 1Gbps, up to 100M

Cat 7a 1Gbps, up to 100M

Spot the difference?

For such low bandwidth any old ethernet cable will do. Get Cat5e as it's good enough for Gigabit when you get gear that supports it.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.
