File cut/copy problem

Go to solution Solved by kirashi,

If you're familiar with booting Linux, I would grab a copy of PartedMagic and boot it from a USB on the computer. I've never had it fail to save files from a near-death hard drive, save for the couple drives that literally sounded like mini-blenders or wood chippers whilst powered on.

If necessary, PartedMagic includes CloneZilla so you could just backup the entire disk, sector by sector, to another 3TB Hard Drive. Then access the working hard drive and copy your files off.

My 3TB HDD is dying a slow and painful death, I'm still using it as I currently have no backup drive to take its place and it does still function as I need it to .. however I've just run in to a very annoying problem.

I have an episode of a TV show I have been trying to move to a different drive and it simply won't do it. It gets to 23% complete then tells me it "can't read from source file or disk" yet I am still able to play the episode in MPC from beginning to end without it getting stuck or failing to seek properly.

I've tried Karen's Replicator to copy it to the other drive, but no luck. I can't cut or copy it to any other drive, including the windows SSD.

Checkdisk can't find anything wrong with the drive, but its SMART reports 3 errors which I posted in the show-off your storage thread, I'll repost them here:

Reallocated Sector Count:                                                  90/36, Worst: 51 (Data = 13520)
Current Pending Sector Count:                                              100/Always OK, Worst: 100 (Data = 136)
Off-Line Uncorrectable Sector Count:                                       100/Always OK, Worst: 100 (Data = 136)

I don't fully understand the results, but I know the data for the last two was 144 a week ago.. :/

Should I just give up and wait until I can replace the drive? It's not super important, it's just very odd to me that the file works fine, but can't be cut or copied ...

I'm not hugely familiar with Linux but my brother is, so I bookmarked this, also got a friend to loan me enough for a new drive so thanks a lot for introducing me to this, seems like it's just in the nick of time :D

It's pretty easy if you or your brother have got a 4GB USB lying around, simply use YUMI-USB or UNetBootin (Google Searches) to load the PartedMagic ISO onto your USB drive, then boot away. Getting it to boot is the most difficult; after that it's just reading the instructions and figuring out what tools to use.

Once you guys get it booted and hook up the dying hard drive, feel free to reach out to me by replying here and I'll do my best to guide you through anything you're stuck on.
