(Hardware Help) Skyrim Bottleneck

Go to solution Solved by Guest Kloaked,

It's your CPU most likely. Your 960 should be running Skyrim with no problems.

Try overclocking the 6300 a little bit if you haven't, or if you're even able to (if you have a good heatsink). If that doesn't help then you'd need to get a better CPU/motherboard.

Hello there LTT Gaming! I am a obsessive modder for Skyrim who has pushed my system to its limit in terms of fps, without the use of uGrids for those wondering. I was wanting to know what a 'professional' opinion would be on what part of my system is causing a issue with my fps in game, although I do use a lot of mods most of them are weapon textures or trees and there aren't that many in comparison to the frame drops I am getting. On Vanilla Skyrim I usually get 60 fps but I do use V-Sync so I don't know what my uncapped fps is unfortunately but I can tell you that in my current modded state I am getting around 42 fps when there is barely anything happening in a remote area with no trees but in combat I sometime drop below 30 fps, now I originally thought that maybe it was my graphics card but after seeing the builds of some other skyrim players with worse Graphics cards than me I was confused. So basically, what do I need to upgrade and any suggestions on what to upgrade to.

CPU: AMD FX-6300

RAM: Hyper-X 2x 4GB (unknown speed as of now)

GPU: GeForce GTX 960 Windforce 4GB

HDD: Some Toshiba pile of crap

P.S. if you do end up suggesting any parts the other games that I usually play or will be playing are things like mmo's which are pretty CPU intensive (correct me if wrong).

Can't possibly overclock my 6300, the only fans that I have in my case are the stock heatsink and the graphics card built in fans. It's a budget PC that I got for Christmas 2 years ago now. Which brand of CPU would you say that is better for gaming in general Intel or AMD? I've heard that the hyper-threading that the i-7 uses can help when it is supported in games but that not many games support the function. I was thinking maybe the new i-5 K skylake processor but I really don't know xD

Even an i3 would yield better results for you. If you can figure out a budget for upgrades, we can help.

Thank you for the offer but budget will be fine, I have been saving up some money for a time like this, I have enough for a new CPU + Mobo + new heatsink.

I go to Wakefield College for the Independent Game Development course there.

It's weird meeting someone on a forum that's nary ten miles away. :P

Bloody hell that is spooky. I don't go to wakefield college but I do go to another local school very near there and a lot of my friends from 'high school' go there xD.
