The 5820k has 28 lanes as we all know. I have two gtx 970 in sli, and also a soundcard. One GTX 970 is in the 16x slot, and the other in the 8x slot. How does all 3 work then?

I just asked to understand why all 3 of the cards worked

There are additional lanes that no one ever talks about provided by the X99 chipset. x1 slots are wired through these lanes, not through the CPU's. Also 16 + 8 = 24 so I don't see why the sound card wouldn't work anyway even if you plugged it into a long slot. You still have 4 lanes left to play with.

If you are using 2 GPUs they will run at 8x. But as linus and many others have proven, this makes 0 performance difference.

Current PC: Origin Millennium- i7 5820K @4.0GHz | GTX 980Ti SLI | X99 Deluxe
