Which Upgrade ? - 7950

Hello,

Summer is almost over and it's time to upgrade the tower!
i've been saving some money for some time now, and I really need to choose which parts I should get.

First of all, I was planning on getting an SSD for OS and a 1080p Monitor (currently on 900p)
But I don't think these are priority. I'm fine with my current monitor and hard drive.....

Then, I went to look for a new GPU for the upcoming games (BF4, Bioshock, Skyrim, Crysis..)
My budget is quite restricted, trying not to go over 380$ and would prefer spending only 300$

I currently have a GTX570, which is clearly getting old nowadays. I still runs great though,
not feeling that much lag..

But i'm thinking of getting either:

- a AMD Saphhire 7950 Vapor-X and OC that bad boy
- 7970
- lowest-priced GTX 770

Now I know, most people will say the 7950 is nowhere close to the 770 but
i've seen benchmarks of the 7950 OC that only has a few frames less than the 770 or 7970

My question is, will a 7950 stand next-gen games? or should I wait christmas to save more money
and get a 7970/ 770?

Thanks ;)

A 770 will perform better, but you'll probably be better off getting something from the 9000 series that will be released soon.

The 9000 series wont be even more expensive? I dont feel comfortable spending over 400$ for just a GPU.

And if I save money, I can buy myself other peripherals/parts

Yeah if you can wait like 10 months

I thought it was Q1 of 2014

So 3-5 months

I'm going to jump in the "wait for the 9XXX" bandwagon.

Definitely 7950 over 7970 in terms of value/performance ratio?

You can overclock a 7950 to near the performance of the 7970 if you get a good one.

So impatient for a new GPU, hope i'll make it to september 25th :D

I don't recommend waiting unless you are willing to spend $450 or more on a new graphics card.

The 9970 will most likely cost $549 and the 9950 will most likely cost $100 less than that.

The rest of the lineup is said to be based on 7000 series GPUs, so a 9870 will most likely perform like a 7970 and a 9850 like a 7950 and so on.

That's why I'd recommend grabbing a 7970 or a 7950 now rather than wait for cards that will give you the same performance and most probably for the same price.

Thanks a lot for your response.

Now, a 7950 Frozr III (OC) or a Sapphire Dual-X 7970?

definitly get the monitor and SSD first..... way better improvement than upgrading your GPU atm. the 570 is still a pretty good card. PLEASE get the ssd and monitor

The ssd can wait, but definitely a monitor.

If I get a 250$ 7950 Twin Froz III, I can buy that monitor in a near future

I posted this on another forum, but I figured I would share it with you since you have a GTX 570.

Here are some benchmarks for Crysis 3, BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider.

Test system:

Intel 3570K @ 4.8GHz
Gigabyte Z77X-UD4H
16GB Samsung DDR3 @ 1600Mhz
Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD
PC Power & Cooling MKIII 600 watt PSU
AMD 13.6 Beta drivers
Nvidia 320.49 drivers

Crysis 3

You can see my benchmark run through HERE and the settings used in the screenshots below.

Comparing reference clocks we are only seeing a 19% increase in performance with the 7950 over the GTX 570. As you raise the clock to 900/2200 the GTX 570 equals the 7950 at reference speeds. Pretty impressive, I was surprised at how well the GTX 570 plays Crysis 3 at these settings. The average overclock for a GTX 570 is around 900Mhz on the core, comparing that to the average overclock on a 7950 of 1150Mhz puts the 7950 ahead 33%.

Tomb Raider

I used the in-game benchmark with Ultimate settings. See the settings screenshots below.

TR5707950_zpsc0440995.png

Comparing reference clocks we are seeing a 32% increase in performance with the 7950. The Overclocked GTX 570  at  950/2200 comes within 3% of the stock 7950. Comparing average overclocks the GTX 570 falls behind by about 50%.

BioShock Infinite

For this benchmark I used the in-game benchmark. Its option number 2 (DX11 w/DDOF) then I run it in 1080P.

 BS5707950_zps5901828e.png

Stock for stock the 7950 pulls ahead by 35%. Comparing average overclocks the 7950 maintains its lead with over 50% more FPS.

Going with a 7950 you should expect to see an increase of  30%-40%(up to double if you overclock) when playing BioShock and Tomb Raider. Crysis 3 was another story. Still one of the toughest games to currently run, Femi does flex pretty hard in this game. I am very impressed with its performance. Especially for a card that’s two generations old, numerically speaking.

Wow thanks for those benchmarks. I'm really trying to get the best bang for my buck and I hope that going from a 570 to a 7950 will be worth it, other wise I'll spend some more money on a 7970, but I guess I can reach the performance of  7970 with and well OC'ed 7950

It's worth it. With an "AVG" 1150/1500 overclock you should be on avg 70-80% faster than a stock GTX 570. The 7970 is only 5-7% faster clock for clock. I would buy a 7950 and save some bucks...

I'd give it a few months tbh for the 9590 and replace your 570 with that so you've moved up two gens rather than just the one with the new gen being on your door step.  For an insta upgrade SSD but you dont seem too fussed about that.
