S4 Camera Quality Test.

whatthe_fuzz

So I moved from the Galaxy Note 2 which had an 8MP rear camera to the Galaxy S4 which has a 13MP camera.

i took my first photo today and was shocked by the great quality.

then i got home and decide to snap some more. I then realized that the "poorer" lighting in my room made the photos quite grainy however in a well lit room the photos look quite well.

the first photo is the one in a well lit room. the following are all in my bedroom where lighting is mediocre.

The colors in this picture alone blow my mind. I'm not sure if its the camera being superb or simply an angle of excellence but i love it.

The blacks are dark and look nice and the camera manages to get all the colors fairly accurate

Between the top and the bottom photo, you can really see the preciseness of the focus. i'm not a big fan of touch-to-focus, i prefer manual, but it is very well implemented on the S4 unlike the Note 2

post-22241-0-17762500-1377078098_thumb.j

in this photo, the camera was having a rough time filtering the LED on the mouse, but when i added a small lightsource it really balanced the strong glow of the LED.

post-22241-0-82763300-1377078102.jpg

this photo bugs me. To me the desk seems warped. almost like a panorama. i noticed this issue on the Note and apparently its present on the S4. The focus is on the bottom logo of the right monitor however everything else is very, well, lacking any sort of definition. (it may just be a case of shaking-hand Syndrome ;) )

these are all mid day natural light photos. what i want to draw attention to is the color accuracy. very true and very bright. im using the lowest ISO setting possible along with the HDR function

This photo does not need a spoiler...

Overall, it has been an improvement to say the least. The camera quality is the best i've personally ever used on any smart phone but it just doesn't cut a replacement for a legitimate camera. i will attempt some outdoor shots tomorrow :D

thanks guys

Do you have it on 13mp? Because the default is 8mp.

yep. i snapped a few in 16:9 which was roughly 9.6MP and then switched to 4:3 which is 13MP.

i prefer the wideness of 16:9 thats why i was playing around it

i think it might be lighting that leads to lower quality. either that or the lack of a tripod. it most of these photos (minus the desk or large area ones) i used an external light source rather than just my ceiling lights. i noticed that it really did make a world of difference.

i might pick up a cheap tripod and a hardcore lamp later on in life. maybe that'll fix it

great photo BTW :D natural light is the king of photos

thx, maybe you should delay the shutterspeed for more light because the pictures get granulair with low light

btw, i'm going to make a thread to show off the xperia z camera, lol

I love the camera on the Z. I must say that I'm ultimately disappointed with the S4 camera. Maybe its just me but quality just doesn't seem to be there like the Xperia Z or the HTC One. I'm getting my paws on a new Nokia 1020 at work next weeks so im hoping to steal that for a day or two and run that :P

that was my biggest complaint about the Note 2. Outdoor photos were superb but indoor anything that was lacking natural light, looked like garbage

Example of Note 2 outdoors

Ya I mean my room is fairly well lit. I dont understand how a 13MP camera can't capture enough light...

I managed to improve my camera settings during rooting the device to be able to try and change the way it captured the light... but it still doesn't help much.

I first started experimenting with rooting on a Samsung galaxy Nexus (Nexus devices are bootloader pretty much unlocked) when they came out because you dont want to risk bricking a samsung, htc, ZTE, sony etc etc etc

I have the S4 but rarely take pictures with it. I am not impressed with any mobile phone photography. I believe in primary use. Mobile phones are primarily used for communication and beyond that feature I do not care much which is why I own a Nikon D7100 for all the pictures but what I can say is that when by any chance i need to take pictures with the S4, I find it difficult to get a good picture in a non sunlight situation.
