Does imgur reduce image quality?

Go to solution Solved by Vitalius,

Ok thank you! One more question. If i want to get the IMG url how would i do that? I'm uploading pictures for a build log on here.. so I need the url of each individual picture.

From www.flickr.com while you are logged in:

  • Hover over You (drop down menu on the top left).
  • Click Photostream.
  • Select the image you want the URL for.
  • Click the Share arrow you see everywhere on the image in the bottom right corner.
  • Click "BBCode".
  • Select the size you want on the drop down menu.
  • Copy the text.

Use that, or cut out the URL between the IMG tags. What I get:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/AkhU2M][img=https://farm1.staticflickr.com/661/22534440359_eacb0e85f9_o.jpg][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/AkhU2M]IMG_20151110_135650[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/62950002@N06/]TPaliciusV[/url], on Flickr

You'd want:

[img=https://farm1.staticflickr.com/661/22534440359_eacb0e85f9_o.jpg]

Of course yours would be a different URL, but you get the idea. You can leave the IMG tags and LTT forums will display the image correctly (useful thing imo).

I have been using my DSLR camera to take some pictures. When i uploaded them to imgur.com they  look kinda funky. Does imgur downscale or change the quality? If so where should I upload these to keep the original quality of the pictures?

imgur uses compression or downscales if they are large enough IIRC.

I use Flickr for uploading images and making albums. You get 1TB of space for free. Uses a yahoo account, so if you have an email with them, you already have an account.

So flickr  does not change quality like imgur does?

AFAICT No. This article mentions that smaller resolution images are compressed more since June on Flickr, but original resolution images are identical and have been compared to their original counterparts.

http://petapixel.com/2015/06/08/flickr-decreased-quality-and-increased-compression-and-users-arent-happy/

So, as long as you share the original resolution and not "Large" or any other scaled images, you are getting 1:1 with the original upload in terms of image quality.

Edit:

From the bottom of that article (which was from June of 2015),

Update: Here’s what Flickr tells us (it’s basically what we found in our tests):

Flickr does not compress originals. If you download your originals, the files you receive will be bit-for-bit identical. Like most photo apps, we create several sizes of thumbnail images for the purpose of showing images quickly on the web and in the mobile apps.

We believe the quality of the thumbnails displayed on Flickr are some of the highest quality in our space. To optimize the user experience, from time to time we make changes to how these thumbnails are created.

So, if you use Flickr as an archive for your files, this doesn’t affect you at all. But for those of you who use Flickr to share your best work on the Web, you might indeed see some quality differences in the resized versions of uploaded photos.

Update: As another example, compare these two photos by photographer Vi Go side-by-side: the one uploaded to Flickr and the one uploaded to 500px. Notice the banding seen in the sky of the Flickr version.

What I get:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/AkhU2M][img=https://farm1.staticflickr.com/661/22534440359_eacb0e85f9_o.jpg][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/AkhU2M]IMG_20151110_135650[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/62950002@N06/]TPaliciusV[/url], on Flickr

You'd want:

[img=https://farm1.staticflickr.com/661/22534440359_eacb0e85f9_o.jpg]

Of course yours would be a different URL, but you get the idea. You can leave the IMG tags and LTT forums will display the image correctly (useful thing imo).

I wish there was an easier way outside of programs.

Unfortunately, you can only share an album via email, through Facebook, Twitter, etc, or embedding the album (which doesn't work on LTT).

There's no way to easily get URLs for images from Flickr in batch/mass edit. :( Without programs, I mean.

I'm sure there are programs for doing that though. I just wouldn't know of any.
