I am planning on building a video editing computer and I want to use RAID10. My question is, with RAID 10 using 4 drives, if I wanted to have project and scratch drives, would I need to have 8 drives or could I set up the scratch drives as RAID1 and then have the project drives as RAID10? Or is it impossible to have 2 different RAID configurations in one PC? Please, HELP!!!!    :(

You can have multiple RAID configurations on a PC at the same time.

You can set up a two drive RAID 1 and a four drive RAID 10 at the same time, if your motherboard has enough SATA ports.

I would recommend the WD Red drives, they work pretty good. If you want more speed, then the Red Pros or the HGST NAS drives.

Hey there ray_stetler,

Theoretically - yes, you can. It really depends on how many SATA ports you have, what motherboard and what RAID controller you are using. :)
You can have all 8 drives in the RAID10 array and simply partition it the way you want or simply use the RAID10 array for storage and all the other drives as standalone storage devices.
It would be helpful if you posted all your specs.
@scottyseng gave you some good suggestions regarding the HDDs.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
