Clock speeds, memory size, and 390 uses less power than the 290.

390 has more VRAM, slightly lower TDP, lower heat output, and clocked to almost 290x levels

They have identical chips. The difference is in binning, like the 4770k versus 4790k, except there were good coolers on some R9 290s so the thermal problems of the 4770k don't translate over. Just the binning.

 

That, and the R9 390 has 8GB of VRAM, but that's not really relevent yet. 4GB is still barely used by even the most demanding games at 1080p.

 the 290 will work with XP. The 390 will not............ lets hope they fix that for us dual booters.

Have both and the 390 is better in every way I tested for.

The 390 has twice the vram and since the vram itself is a bit faster, the card is about 10% faster overall.

Yes, a thousand times yes. In my case the 390 was cheaper than a 290, but that's because I only buy Sapphire Radeon cards. But it was still worth the purchase of the 390 even though my 290 was only months old, it's that much better.
