Hello,

So I'm planning to unify my houses network setup (right now the phone modem is in the basement with a very old distribution setup, internet is on the main floor in the office, and cable in in the living room) and I am looking to purchase a server rack. Well, finding those in Canada hasn't been the easiest thing.

I looked at monoprice, and they had a great reviewed/looking rack, but it was far too expensive to ship ($200 shipping). So I kept looking.

Then I ran into a company called Star Tech, and they happen to sell racks.

So, here's my question, are Star Tech racks any good?

Are there any other recommendations on where to buy a rack?

Thanks for the help in advance.

What size and configuration you need? Open , closed , with caster wheels? Wall mount?  How you plan to mount.. vertically or horizontal with rails?  Depth.. how much space do you have?

http://ncix.ca/products/?minorcatid=1276  or http://www.newegg.ca/Server-Racks-Cabinets/SubCategory/ID-803

Probably better shipping rates since they are more localized for you.

I've used a wall mounted Kendall Howard bought from cable and kits (but not sure if they ship to canada).  The monopriced racks are ok, I have the 12u wall mount.  The metal isn't as thick as the Kendall but it's sturdy once everything is mounted and bolted correctly.

edit: I haven't used the startech ones, but they look better built than the monopriced ones.  istarusa is another company, but I've only use their hotswaps and they are built well.

Not sure of your budget or need, here's a cheap alternative... stainless steel tier rack:

I'm looking at open 4 post racks, 35-45u (not that I'll fill it, but would rather have the space and not need it then need it and not have it). Not wall mounted, indifferent about castors.

The ones I was looking at on monoprice was this very sturdy/heavy duty looking one.

The monoprice one is a tank.  From the specs  (edit: and brochure last page)and looks, it's this claytek model: So maybe you can find one in canada.

The startech is minimal, but has adjustable depth.

I don't see any issues with sturdiness in either one, but no doubt the monoprice/claytek one will be more solid.

sooo.. here the cheapo plan b racks

http://wiki.eth0.nl/index.php/LackRack

they cost about 15$ per 8u,

if you need more, you just stack them...

they re far less sturdy(it s ikea stuff, what do you expect) but also far cheaper.

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.
